I was discussing the recent picture in the NY Post that has been causing quite a stir for its connotations. It is either thinly veiled or quite stupid on their part. Most of us are not aware of how much revision the news goes through before reaching us. It is not an arbitrary process at all, and every image used needs to be paid for. I find it hard to believe that it could get through so many levels of scrutiny without the question arising internally before it got to print. As a media stunt it has a repercussion.

It has probably sold papers but what about its fan base? I know from speaking to people that it is really offending some of them. Even as a joke, you have to assess whether it was strong enough to warrant printing. I know what they were referencing in the cartoon, but its reference to the stimulus package is unnecessary and does not add a logical punch line.

This is not the first time that something like this has happened. Scan the covers of magazines prior to the Civil Rights Movement. It happened as recently as late last year with the New Yorker running a racist cartoon linking Obama to Osama Bin Laden. That it can happen in this era is most saddening. These are choices and they are clearly made to make statements. With every instance a line is drawn that alienates a demographic and expresses an internal view of the magazine. Where are the cartoons about them?
