Where Have All The Newsmen Gone?

by Kyran

In this age of blogging, and the media's scramble to shift to the internet, what is your opinion of the state of the news? There are a few reputable sources around that have long been institutions that we rely on for honest and unbiased reporting, but I have noticed an increasing amount of opinion replacing serious journalism, and tabloid journalism replacing real news. I understand that reporting the news is a business, but it is an art as well, and one that I feel is losing its respect in its own industry.

What happened to serious journalists and reporting the facts? Why am I opening article links and finding blogs in place of legitimate news sources. Gone are the days of media protection for celebrities, but are we so starved for gossip that we need entertainment shows on television to review tabloid photos in lieu of an interview. There was a time when journalists could command interviews and get to their sources directly. Who wants to read an article quoting another article as news?

Not to mention the anachronistic stance of entertainment industry shows blatantly pandering to celebrities and skirting scandals that break on the internet long before they reach TV and print. Who wants to watch an insider show that misses the scoop? I make note of the scramble to report the news, which has shifted dramatically from TV and print media to cyberspace. I admit that I rely heavily on the news reported online. You can find things out instantly and at your own convenience. However, I am constantly checking date and time stamps to see which is the most recent report in my searches, and still rely most strongly on items reported by the Associated Press. I do not subscribe to NY Times because they have no secrets, just skilled writers. I do not read the news for a critique of style, but for substance. Still they are an institution that I respect and hold to high standards.

I do miss the days of serious news stories and serious journalists. I guess, as with movies, when the newsmen stop producing the papers the businessmen started undermining its integrity. It's not just a business to the public...it's an art and one that we are in dire need of. In our quest for truth, to have opinions replace facts is dangerous. Please return the news.
