Voyeurism and the Modern World by Kyran I have long battled with my best friend about the value of social networking sites and having a profile on them. My stance on this is a strong one, partly because I feel that it is removing the social bond that we have with real people. We create a virtual world that we live in via email, texting and reading about people that we don't even see or speak to. Much like the forward, it does not replace a real communication or a personal presence in my world. I think it is an idle and voyeuristic tendency of modern society. We focus our attention on the real world like we would a TV set. I also feel that it is detrimental, especially to younger generations that are growing up with a socially removed way of expressing themselves. It takes little risk to get to know someone online. Intimacy with strangers is easy. I worry that when they actually have people in their lives they will not be adjusted enough to be in real relationships. And what of romance and chemistry? They are not just stories that our parents told us and lovers wrote about in bygone eras. In this age of instant gratification and padded profiles have we crossed into uncharted territory? When we can be in company and still interrupt meaningful experiences to check emails and send texts, are we setting ourselves up for a table of one?
