The Thinkerby Kyran Camille Claudel. At first the name did not mean anything to me. It grew in importance through my father and a series of debates we have had in the past few years. She ignited a passion in him that bespoke sympathy and vindication after he watched a documentary about her life. I have neither seen the film, nor the documentary, but I am a fan of her consort and have revered his work for many years. Our debate became a question of ownership and quintessentially focused on history's perception of their respective work. My father's contention is that she was more than his muse and actually physically created or worked on the pieces that he envisioned and have later become legendary in their impact on the medium. At this point, only they will know the truth. It becomes a question of hand vs. mind. History always remembers the visionary. Without vision there can be no interpretation. The same can be said of Salvador Dali's jewelry collection. A little known period of his career that has fascinated me for years. His collection of one-of-a-kind pieces were direct translations of his surrealist art in jewels. The catalogue raisonne (from it's unveiling in 1966) credits Carlos Alemany as the jeweler that brought Dali's designs to life. It brought to question the vessel and the source. It is my stance that, without the mind, the hand would have nothing to create. Much like the musician that plays from sheet music but cannot compose. The skill requires direction. They are a vessel and not a source of creation. As history continues to play out, it is obvious that may change on some levels of perception, but once associated, it is hard to dissociate author from act, as we were introduced to them. History's fascination with how things work will always seek answers from the thinker.
