Who's Pulling The Strings? by Kyran It has been long debated that there must be a change in Hollywood. Inside, I'm sure there are proponents that would contend that that machine works and ask, "Why tamper with a good thing?" I'm also sure that there are parts of that machine that would love to see a change, but do not think it is a viable war to wage, as beneficiaries of a broken system. I once had a series of long conversations with a Broadway director and he pointed out something that stayed with me. He had once sought to rally a change and was almost ostracized. He said it was as if he had stolen money from them. In essence, that is what he would be doing. The problem lies not only in cycle. It lies within us as well. If you think of a pyramid, you will understand me better. The symbol of power lies at the top because that is where the collective focus is. What we fail to believe as a people is that power is in the base because the structure cannot stand without a foundation. Our solidarity is the crack in that foundation. To position yourself in the stream of revenue requires that a different role be assumed. Consumers must shift to producers. The only reason that these stereotypes persist is because of the puppeteer. We often blame the puppets as acting on their own accord. For every move that we see, imagine there are untold moves behind the scenes that provoke it. If you watch and read up on the history of independent film, you will note that while the intention was to be outside of the established system there were often marriages to the major studios that allowed the films to be made and distributed. Follow the path to production. Follow the strings: - There are no minority owned networks or movie studios, but there are production companies. - Production companies pitch their concepts to studios and networks. - Networks introduce writers and make changes (casting, concept, etc.) to fit what they feel will make money. If you want to see changes, stop supporting the same things and people and start placing different people in charge. When you watch a movie that disturbs you for its stereotypes or flat portrayals, watch closely...watch the credits.
