HIV Myths 16. Behavioural factors such as recreational drug use and multiple sexual partners-not HIV-account for AIDS. Risky behaviour increases the likelihood of exposure to and infection with HIV. Drug use has other adverse health effects, as do other STIs, but these are not the same as AIDS.
17. The distribution of AIDS cases casts doubt on HIV as the cause. Viruses are not gender-specific, yet only a small proportion of AIDS cases are among women. Not true. Women now account for the majority of HIV infected individuals.
18. The spectrum of AIDS-related infections seen in different populations proves that AIDS is actually many diseases, not caused by HIV. As above, AIDS is indeed many diseases, but the susceptibility to these diseases, which are normally fought off, is caused by the destruction of the immune system by the HIV virus.
19. Explain Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART) - People see this as a cure This is not a cure, there's no evidence that the virus can be completely cleared from the body. Viral load, or the amount of HIV virus actually in the body, can be reduced to very low levels, and this will halt the destruction of the immune cells and allow recovery. Very low viral load also reduces the risk of transmission of HIV, although precautions should still be taken. It is possible for someone on HAART to live a reasonable quality of life. However, the side effects are often unpleasant and any complacency over HIV is misguided - taking HAART is for life and is not something to be thought of lightly, it's not like a cure for a sore throat. . Also, there are HAART drug resistant strains of HIV emerging. In addition, antibodies produced in response to HIV will remain, so someone will never stop being HIV positive.
20. Provide information about transmission of HIV and precautions…
Male to Male Most high risk: Anal intercourse Circumcision reduces (but does not eliminate) risk as HIV attaches to cells found in the foreskin. Condoms for oral or anal intercourse very effective precaution when used properly.
Male to Female Most high risk: Anal and vaginal intercourse Precautions - male or female condoms, dental dam for M to F oral.
Female to Female Lower risk, but dental dams will prevent transmission.
Magnetic Couples (+,-) Similar precautions as above, plus regular testing and health montioring for the negative partner. the positive partner should be on viral-load-lowering drugs if necessary and also be monitoring their health closely. PS - just one more point about magnetic couples - if there's an accidental exposure, you can contact a doctor for post-exposure prophylaxis - anti HIV drugs to reduce the risk of transmission to the negative partner.
