HIV Myths

1. HIV is the same as AIDS.

HIV is human immunodeficiency virus. It infects the body's immune system. Acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or aids, occrus when the immune system is too badly damaged to fight off infections it would normally defeat easily. Someone can be infected with HIV for months to years without having symptoms of aids, and with ARVs and rapid intervention to treat opportunistic infections, the onset of AIDS can be delayed further.

 2.  Sexual intercourse with a virgin will cure AIDS.

The AIDS virus HIV cannot be removed from the body by sexual intercourse. All this does is risk transmission of the virus to another person.

 3. Sexual intercourse with an animal will avoid or cure AIDS.

Whilst it is not possible to catch HIV from an animal, it certainly won't cure aids.

 4. HIV antibody testing is unreliable.

Advances over the years mean that HIV serology is reliable. False positive and negative results can occur, as with any medical test, so it is usually recommended that a follow-up test is done, especially in the case of a positive result.

 5.  AIDS can be spread through casual contact with an HIV infected individual.

This is highly unlikely. HIV is transmitted through blood or bodily fluid (excluding tears, saliva) contact. The virus cannot survive outside the body for more than a few minutes, either.

 6. HIV cannot be transmitted through oral sex.

HIV can be transmitted through oral sex, particularly if there are sores or bleeding in the mouth, gums, etc. Oral sex carries a lower risk of transmission than vaginal or anal intercourse.
